Practice with the Edmonds CC Tritons Coaches

April 7th, 2008

Today the Padres had a chance to practice with two of the coaches of the Edmonds Community College Baseball team, the Tritons. What a great opportunity for the kids to have some time with guys who teach and coach baseball for a living. Head Coach Brad Ditter played for the Washington Nationals organization and as an associate scout for the Detroit Tigers. Scott Watson coached the Mariner HS and Mountlake Terrace HS baseball teams before becoming the pitching coach at Edmonds. Both coaches run baseball camps for the youth in our area.

We mostly worked on fielding drills and I think us coaches learned a thing or two watching these guys teach the kids. Its nice to see Christian confident in fielding this year and I think he was enjoying the coaches tell him, “Exactly! That’s the way to do it!”

I think the funniest moment was at the beginning when coach Brad asked if they would rather be playing video games instead of practicing in the rain…to which all of them said that they would like to play baseball. I think coach Brad was impressed with the Padres answer and then a couple moments later one of the players confessed and said he would rather be playing video games. 😉

I would have taken more pictures, but it rained through the whole practice. The kids also got their jackets today…I think they turned out great! Click on the pictures to enlarge them.

Finally…Our 1st Game! Padres vs Red Sox

April 5th, 2008

Padres

After being snowed out last Friday and yesterdays game rained out…the Pacific Little League Super 9’s Padres finally got the first game of the season in. At first the beginning of the game looked like it was going to be a really long season for the Padres. The bats were cold and the defense was really lacking. The Padres left our lead off hitter Brock, stranded on 2nd base and at the bottom of the 1st, the Red Sox scored 5 runs easily.

Christian wasn’t himself today and has had a sore throat for the last couple of days. His normally clutch hitting wasn’t there and he struggled at all his at bats. He hit the ball in the top of the 3rd inning but was thrown out running to first. His game highlight was throwing the runner out at first while playing the pitcher position.

Zach P had a monster triple hit to outfield in the 2nd inning and cleared the bases to get the Padres tied at 5-5. The Padres had a double play in the 5th inning and lead 12-7 at the middle of the 6th. Our new players Reece, Sam and Teo are great additions to the club. Sam is a go-getter on the field, Teo has power and Reece is solid at the plate.

The teams biggest weakness is fielding, the Padres need to learn to get the ball to the pitcher to stop the play. We almost blew the game in the bottom of the 6th because the outfielders kept the ball. Guess what we’re working on at practice this week.

I attended a coaching seminar at Edmonds Community College earlier this year. The coaching staff had offered to come out to one of our practices and work with the kids. So I took them up on this offer and we will be practicing with the Ed CC Tritons on Monday afternoon. The kids will be wearing their uniforms and I hope to get a couple great pictures of the kids with the college players.

Our next game will be against the Cubs on Friday the 11th. See you there.

Final Score: Padres 12 – Red Sox 11

Coro Estivo – Wana Baraka

December 2nd, 2007

A friend of mine David Hendrix is studying to become a choral conductor. During the summer he put together a summer choir or Coro Estivo to practice his conducting skills. I’m editing video taken at the concert to create a DVD.

Battlestar Galactica: Razor – Advance Screening

November 13th, 2007

Last night my friend Troy and I attended the advance screening of the new Battlestar Galactica: Razor movie at Pacific Place theaters in Seattle. We arrived at 4 pm to get in line and were the 4th and 5th people from the beginning of the line. What a crowd! Poor Troy waited next uber lab coat geek (see picture below) who talked about the video format, H.264 codecs, Flash Gordon vs Stargate and their friend who complained the whole time that she had a medical condition and whined about having to stand in line. Troy tried to ignore them by trying to unsuccessfully go to sleep in line.

It seemed that everyone in line had an iPhone…even the girl I sat next to who said she was a late adopter of technology and a fan of the new Doctor Who. While we were waiting in line, I ran into an old co-worker from the Electro Rent days Tim Thew. It turns out that he works with Jeremy and Jarod Owen. He said that he ran into Peter Stapleton and Arne Buhmann not too long ago. What a small world.

In the theater I sat next to the the guy who’s jokes were only funny to him but had to blab it out through out the whole movie. Jokes like, “Oh here comes the Microsoft Zune Psychedelic commercial again!” I think he used this joke about 3-4 times and it was annoying every time.

Battlestar Galactica Razor tells the story of the Battlestar Pegasus several months prior to it finding the Galactica. Getting to see the movie on a big screen before it airs on Sci-Fi channel in 2 weeks was awesome. The way they integrated the main BSG cast into the Pegasus storyline was pretty cool and the special effects were outstanding. I highly recommend watching this movie if you are a fan of the new series.

The cast and crew of BSG sat right behind us in the VIP seating area including Jamie Bamber, his wife Kelly Norton, Stephanie Chavez-Jacobsen, director Wayne Rose and special effects supervisors Gary Hutzel & Michael Davidson. I got a sweat-shirt for being one of the first people in line and Jamie & Stephanie gave away 3 Zunes and a Xbox 360 at the end of the show (see video). Bamber said that, “This screening is being shown in the 10 biggest cities and Seattle!” LOL – They gave everyone that attended a couple BSG graphic novels and a Cylon action figure to take home.

I really enjoyed the movie and being able to attend this event. “By your command!” 🙂

Citizen of the Month

November 5th, 2007

Brandon was chosen for Citizen of the Month last Friday. What a ham! I wish the person who announces our children’s names would actually pronounce our last name correctly…Ah-bell-la or Ah-bell-ya but not Ah-bay-la. :/
